Playing the Violin During Brain Surgery: A Unique Neurosurgical Case in Italy

Playing the Violin During Brain Surgery: A Unique Neurosurgical Case in Italy
In 2019, a remarkable case of modern neurosurgery took place in Taranto, Italy, at Ospedale Santissima Annunziata.
A 23-year-old professional violinist underwent brain tumor surgery while remaining awake and playing the violin during the procedure.
The operation was performed using the awake surgery technique, a neurosurgical approach that allows surgeons to monitor brain functions in real time while the patient is conscious. During the intervention, the patient is asked to respond to questions or perform specific tasks. In this case, playing the violin was used as a functional test.
Throughout a significant part of the surgery, the patient played her instrument, enabling the surgical team to precisely identify and preserve brain areas responsible for:
  • hand movement,
  • coordination,
  • musical and higher cognitive functions.
The procedure lasted approximately five hours and was completed successfully. This case became the first of its kind in Southern Italy and attracted wide attention from the medical community and the media, including Rai News.
Medical TeamThe surgery was carried out by a multidisciplinary team of neurosurgeons and anesthesiologists.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Gounaris took part in the procedure, contributing to the successful implementation of awake surgery and functional brain monitoring techniques.
Clinical SignificanceThis clinical case clearly demonstrates how advanced neurosurgical methods make it possible to:
  • remove brain tumors with high precision,
  • minimize neurological risks,
  • preserve the patient’s quality of life and professional abilities.
The story of the violinist from Taranto has become a powerful example of how medicine, science, and personalized surgical approaches can work together to achieve optimal outcomes.
